The Crest High School Lady Lancers put a bit of a scare in top-seed Uniontown before ultimately falling 17-5 in the opening round of the regional tournament.
Following last week’s 20-3, 16-0 sweep at the hands of the Lady Eagles last week, Crest had no intentions of going out quietly Tuesday as they jumped out to a 5-1 lead before eventually succumbing to a 17-5 fifth-inning mercy rule.
Following a trio of singles in the opening frame, the Lady Lancers junior first baseman McKenna Powell put Crest on the scoreboard with an RBI grounder.
Junior catcher Kaelin Nilges added another run with an RBI double and later stole home on an errant pitch to give Crest a 5-1 advantage. Nilges added the second of her team-leading two RBIs with a third-inning sacrifice fly, but that was as close to victory as the Lady Lancers would get as Uniontown scored 16-unanswered runs to run away with the win.
Along with leading Crest in RBIs, Nilges also had a team-leading three hits while perfect in the batter’s box in 3 of 3 at-bats.
Senior second baseman Karlee Boots also hit a perfect 3 of 3 while Powell, junior outfielder Aylee Beckmon and junior outfielder Jaycee Schmidt hit in 2 of 3 opportunities.
With the loss, the Lady Lancers wrap up the year 1-22. They graduated seniors Cursten Allen, Delaney Ramsey and Boots, but should return stronger next season considering a majority of their 2026 roster will be incoming seniors.
