MORAN — Playing at home was the right recipe for Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcat basketball teams Tuesday.
The Wildcat girls put together four quarters of good basketball to gain their first win in Three Rivers League play. Marmaton Valley nailed down a 59-49 win over visiting Chetopa High’s Hornet girls.
It’s amazing what a couple of easy baskets will do for a team.
“Once we settled down and ran an offense and ran it through, we got easy baskets,” said Denny Lasley, Marmaton Valley High’s boys’ head coach.
Marmaton Valley’s boys had a 21-20 halftime lead. They expanded it on a 16-9 run in the third quarter on their way to a 49-41 win the Hornets.
The victory lifted the Wildcat boys to 3-3 in Three Rivers League play and 6-12 overall. Marmaton Valley’s girls improved to 1-5 in league and 3-15 overall.

Andrew Porter paced the Hornets with 13 points.
“Our girls came out and really played well in the first half and did not have a letdown in the second half,” said Kent Houk, Marmaton Valley girls’ head coach.
“We played good defense and played as a team. We hit 19 of 30 free throws, which was a big factor.”
Alysha Westhoff led the Wildcat girls with 22 points and eight assists. Cheyanne Miller scored 10 points and controlled 10 rebounds.
Kailey Boyd had 10 points. Maggie Meiwes pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked two shots. Morgan Henry had 10 rebounds.
