The Iola Mustangs girls and boys track and field teams finished second and third respectively while hosting Tuesday’s Marv Smith Invitational Tuesday.

Iola juniors Keegan Hill and James Hunt, as well as seniors Mahailie Genoble and Ari Ramirez kept the gold medals right at home along with several other top five finishes from their Mustang teammates.

“I’m pretty pleased, and it’s always nice to see the kids have such success in front of a home crowd,” said Iola coach David Daugharthy.

Hill medaled in multiple events. His first came in the 1600, clearing four laps in 4:35. In the 3200, Hill lapped multiple runners while en route to a gold medal with a 10:19 run. Junior James Hunt proved his kick was too much for the competition in his first-place finish in the 800 in 2:22.

In girls action, Ramirez won gold in the 800 with a 2:48 and took silver in the 1600 in 6:19.22.

Genoble remains the local queen of the 300 hurdles, besting the competition in 50.7 seconds, and took second in the 200-meter dash with a 29.07 run.

Southern Coffey County sprinters Lillian Raker and Madalynn Garretson take off from the starting line during the 100-meter dash.

“We have a week off, which is nice, and our varsity is not coming back until next Friday in Chanute,” Coach Daugharthy said. “They need a break. We’ve been pounding meets and hopefully this will help us get ready for the peak of the season.”

The Marmaton Valley boys and girls both took fifth place.

The girls 4×100 team, including senior Kylah Sander, junior Taylen Blevins, senior Sophia Heim and junior Evva Saunder took first after barely missing the 1-minute mark in 1:00.82.

Sander also took first in the 100-meter dash (14.22) and third in the 200 meters (29.19).

In boys action, junior Cooper Scharff took first in the javelin with a 142’ 5” throw. Junior Dagan Barney took second in discus with a 119’ 11” throw and senior Todd Stevenson took second in the long jump with a 18’ 10” leap.

The Humboldt Lady Cubs finished in fourth place while the Cubs finished sixth.

Senior Carson Peters took first in the discus with a 149’, 5” throw. Junior Jean Yumba continues dominating the women’s shot put after hitting a 35’ 4” throw.

Freshman Aspen Wimsett continues making a name for herself in distance running with a first-place finish in the 1600 in 6:18.57. Hours later, she secured a first-place finish in the 3200 in 14:03.

Although one of the smallest schools competing Tuesday, Southern Coffey County did not leave empty handed.

Freshman Lillian Raker took third in the 100-meter dash in 20.96 seconds, followed by fellow fifth-place freshman Madalynn Garretson, who also took third in the high jump with a 4’ 4” leap.
