MVHS softball, baseball teams begin season

YATES CENTER  — Marmaton Valley High’s softball team captured two wins in its first outing of the season Thursday The MVHS Wildcats got past host Yates Center 11-10 and 15-12.
Marmaton Valley High’s baseball team let the first game of the season slip away against the Yates Center Wildcats, losing 7-6. The MVHS boys came back and held off Yates Center in the second game to win 9-8.
Maggie Meiwes went the distance for the Marmaton Valley girls. She issued four walks, hit one batter and struck out one.
Marmaton Valley was down 4-2 when it scored three runs in the third. Marmaton Valley tied the game at 6-all with a run in the fifth inning.
Marmaton Valley pushed across five runs in the top of the seventh inning. But Marmaton Valley had trouble fielding the ball in the bottom of the inning as Yates Center pushed across four runs.
The MVHS girls stopped the rally to claim the one-run win. Meiwes connected for two doubles and Kailey Boyd had two singles.
Hannah Endicott had a single and a triple while Kacie Shadden hit a single and a double. Jamee McEndree singled.
In the second game, Endicott  got the pitching victory, walking one, hitting two batters and striking out two. Marmaton Valley had 19 hits in the game.
Marmaton Valley had a 10-5 lead when Yates Center scored seven runs in the fourth. Marmaton Valley stormed back to the lead with two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
“We hit the ball very well but defensively, we hurt ourselves with errors,” said Brenda Mills, MVHS softball head coach.
“These were our first games of the season so it was nice to win two. We just need to work on our fielding. Both our pitchers threw strikes.”
Tabitha Ford led the Marmaton Valley offense with four singles and MaRyiah Cavender had three base hits. Meiwes had two singles and a double.
Shadden hit a single and a double. Endicott and Boyd each had two singles. McEndree, Kayla McNutt and Michele Heskett had a single.
In the baseball action, Marmaton Valley charged from behind to take a 6-4 lead heading into the seventh of the first game with Yates Center.
“We recorded two quick outs then followed with two costly errors that led to the winning runs,” said Derek Scharff, MVHS baseball head coach. Marmaton Valley lost 7-6.
Jimmy Frye took the loss after giving up six hits and one walk. He struck out 10 batters.
Ryan Smith pounded out a double and a triple and drove in three runs for Marmaton Valley. Frye had a single and a double with two RBIs. Sage Hall hit two singles.
Cole Becker doubled. Derrick Carr, Daylen Houk and Austin Harrison each had a single.
Marmaton Valley produced six runs in the second inning to gain a 7-0 lead. It was up 9-3 after four innings.
Yates Center got two runs in the fifth then scored three more in the sixth. Marmaton Valley hung on to a 9-8 lead.
Houk hit a two-run home run and a double to lead the MVHS offense. Gage Stewart had a single and a triple while Frye had a double and a triple.
Becker had three singles. Hall and Smith each had two singles.
Becker got the win in relief of starter Carr, who went 1 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on one hit and four walks plus had two strikeouts. Becker worked 5 1/3 innings, allowed five runs on seven hits and four walks with seven strikeouts.
“I was pleased with our composure to stay in the game and finish it. We need to learn to play a full seven innings. We are a very young team and should learn from our mistakes,” Scharff said.
Marmaton Valley’s teams play at Frontenac Thursday.
