The Marmaton Valley High Lady Wildcats’ goal was to be aggressive in their matchup against the Pleasanton Blu-Jays — it turned out to be their worst enemy as mounting fouls put the victory out of their reach Friday night in Moran.
They came out on the losing end of the 60-41 contest, after the Blue Jays began to pull away in the third quarter. But, the Wildcats showed sparks in some key points during the game.
“We hustled a lot,” Head Coach Kent Houk said. “Our goal was to be aggressive, but the calls got a bit touchy and that took us out of our gameplan.”
It took time for the Wildcats to get into the game, the Blue Jays hit them hard with a 7-0 run to start. But, some key plays from Kaitlin Ensminger, Kailey Boyd and Emily Meiwes got Marmaton Valley back in the swing of things. Mackenzie Tynon hit a 2-pointer with 39 seconds left in the first.
A burst of energy hit the Wildcats in the second, they pulled within two points, 15-23. But, numerous fouls put the opponent in the bonus early in the second.
It would prove to haunt the Wildcats for the rest of the game. The girls went into the locker room down 26-15.
The third quarter started with some quick points from Ensminger, Boyd and Tessa Olson. Before long, however, they were caught in the same trap with the bonus. The Blu-Jays put on the full-court press in late in third, which led to three consecutive steals and layups. They began to pull away back to an 11-point lead by the end of third, 37-26.
By the fourth quarter, Marmaton Valley began to lose its muster.Molly Hamlin gave the Wildcats one last breath of fresh air with a long 2-pointer with just over a minute left.
“I have no gripes with how the girls played tonight, they showed a lot of effort,” Houk said.
He said they will need to put more emphasis on getting more space in the paint for rebounds before the matchup against Altoona-Midway on Tuesday.
“We need to start boxing out, they got a lot of second shots they shouldn’t have gotten,” Houk said. “But, if we give the effort we gave tonight, we have a good chance of winning against Altoona.”
