CHANUTE — Iola Middle School’s boys concluded their basketball season Monday, winning three of four games at Chanute.
Iola won the eighth-grade A-team game 40-23 after trailing 11-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Ponies went on a  9-0 run to take the lead. They had a 17-7 fourth-quarter surge to put the game on ice.
“After the first quarter our defense was the difference,” said Marty Taylor, IMS head coach. “Coach Slane does a great job with his kids and they played hard.”
Taylor said the Ponies shot the ball well, going 19 of 34. He said Jacob Cooper had worked harder than anyone over the past two years and did a great job in his first varsity game Monday.
Cooper scored two points for Iola. Tyler McIntosh and Adam Kauth each tossed in 10 points. Tyler Powelson added eight points and had five rebounds.
John Whitworth and Trent Latta each had five points. McIntosh and Whitworth each had four rebounds.
“No one player sticks out with this group. They’re a team. They work hard every day,” Taylor said.
The eighth-grade A-team finished  8-4. Taylor said the group had won 17 games over two years at IMS.
Chanute won the eighth-grade B-team game 25-9. Michael Wilson scored five points. Cooper and Trey Wilson each had two points.
Iola’s seventh-grade A-team needed overtime to win. The Ponies and the Rockets forged a 23-23 tie at the end of regulation. Iola used an 8-3 run in the extra period to win 31-26.
“Drew Faulhaber made a great drive to the basket and got fouled with one second left. The score was tied. Drew missed both free throws but he didn’t get his head down and did a great job in overtime,” Taylor said.
Taylor said Shane Walden hit a big three-pointer in the overtime. “Everybody contributed. It’s a great way to finish the year,” Taylor said as the team went 7-5.
Faulhaber had 10 points for Iola. Kaden Macha and Alex Bauer each had eight points and six rebounds. Walden had three points and Isaiah Grover added two.
Iola won the seventh-grade B-team game 25-23. Drake Dieker fired in 10 points and Adam Peterson had nine. Travis Hermstein added four points and Matt Jacobs scored two.
