FREDONIA — Playing back-to-back games, Yates Center High’s Wildcats made it two for two with a 68-37 win Friday night over Fredonia High’s Yellowjackets.
Yates Center made up its non-league game with Waverly High’s Bulldogs Thursday. The game was postponed from Tuesday. The Wildcats claimed a 52-48 win at home.
With the victory Friday at Fredonia, the Wildcats improved to 5-1 in Tri-Valley League play. They are 7-2 overall.
Fredonia beat the Yates Center girls 64-37 Friday. The Wildcat girls are 1-5 in league play and 2-7 overall.
There was no report on the girls’ games against Fredonia or Waverly.
Yates Center’s teams will do the same thing this coming week — playing at home Thursday against Flinthills and against Hartford on Friday.
“We played pretty well Friday night and shot really well from the free-throw line (14-19), said Jason Weilert, Wildcat head coach. “We got a quick start and ran our offense.”
Yates Center led 17-8 after one quarter and was up 32-21 at intermission. The Cats outscored the Yellowjackets 36-16 in the second half.
Dalton Smith fired in 18 points for the Cats. Blake Francis chipped in with 16. Paul Stockebrand had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Brandon Voth had eight points to lead Fredonia.
In a junior varsity boys’ game, Fredonia beat Yates Center 54-23. Robert Arnold had eight points for Yates Center.
On Thursday night at home, the Wildcats led most of the game against Waverly. Weilert said his players made some key shots down the stretch.
Yates Center got 13 points each from Jake Morrison, Stockebrand and Smith.
Waverly was led by Travis Sipe with 16 points.
