Yellowjackets sting Wildcat teams in Tri-Valley play

YATES CENTER – Yates Center High’s Wildcat girls and boys could not generate offense early and they paid the price at home Friday night.
Fredonia High’s Yellowjacket girls smothered the Wildcat girls with stingy full-court defense. It made for a long first half for Yates Center, which trailed 40-10 at halftime.
In the second half, the Yellowjackets backed off the pressure. Yates Center managed to score 23 points but lost 62-33 in Tri-Valley League play.
“We don’t take care of the basketball. You can’t score points if you don’t get the basketball past half-court,” said Abbie Collins, YCHS girls’ head coach. “We haven’t developed that aggressive nature to be strong with the basketball and go to the basket.”
YATES CENTER’S boys started much the same way as the girls. They trailed 9-0 after one quarter. Brent Rice broke through for the Wildcats at the 7:27 mark of the second quarter with a basket.
The Yellowjackets didn’t let the Wildcat boys back in the game. Fredonia won the TVL contest 54-29.
For the Wildcat girls, they were plagued by turnovers in the first quarter as they watched Fredonia establish a 24-2 lead.
Yates Center got a couple of free throws by Briaanna Knowles and Becky Wendland midway through second quarter. Emily Baker scored a basket to end a four-point run for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats scored 13 points in the third quarter to trail 57-23 after three. Under a running clock, the Wildcats added 10 points in the fourth period.
The Wildcat girls were led in scoring by Knowles with nine and Paige Steinforth with eight points. Yates Center was without starters Bailie Chambers and Lindsay Francis. They were out with injuries.
Yates Center’s girls are 2-4 in league play and 3-7 overall.
Fredonia was led by Shelbey Baker with 16 points. She was 8 of 10 at the free-throw line. Alicia Couch added 10.
The Yates Center girls won the junior varsity game 45-13.
In the boys’ varsity game, Fredonia power its way to a 30-5 halftime advantage. Yates Center held a 12-9 scoring edge in the third quarter but the Yellowjackets finished with a 15-12 run in the fourth period.
Blake Francis hit two three-pointers for Yates cener and scored eight points. Austin McNett had six points.
Joe Siegele rang up 24 points, which included five threes, for the Yellowjackets. Brandon Voth added 13 points.
Yates Center’s teams are idle Tuesday. They play at Harford next Friday.
