FREDONIA — Yates Center High’s Wildcat basketball teams went into Tuesday night’s games with a lot on the line. Wins by both Wildcat teams would im-prove their spots in next week’s Kansas Class 1A Regional tournament, hosted by Yates Center.
Yates Center’s boys pulled away late to gain a 53-39 win over host Fredonia High’s Yellowjackets.
The win put them at 9-9 overall and 6-6 in Tri-Valley League play.
Earlier the Wildcat girls dropped a 48-38 decision to the Yellowjackets. That put them at 7-11 overall and 2-10 in the TVL.
Seedings and pairings for the 1A regional were done today.
Yates Center’s teams finish out a four-game run this week at home. The Wildcat squads, which just played at Burlington Monday, host Burlington Thursday in league action. Neodesha is at Yates Center Friday.
“We played well against Burlington on Monday in a loss. Tonight we didn’t have the intensity in a very physical game,” said Jason Weilert, Yates Center boys’ head coach.
Weilert said it came down to the fourth quarter. The Wildcats were up 35-32 after three quarters and then outscored Fredonia 18-7.
Dylan Sicka fired in 15 points for the Cats. Paul Stockebrand had 11 points.
Devin Baker scored 12 points for Fredonia.
In a boys’ junior varsity game, Fredonia won 55-33. Blake Francis had 15 points for Yates Center.

WE PLAYED three quarters well but got outhustled and outrebounded in the fourth quarter,” said Abbie Collins, Yates Center girls’ head coach.
The Wildcat girls led 20-19 at halftime and were up 31-29 after three quarters. Fredonia outscored Yates Center 19-7 in the final eight minutes.
Kassy Reynolds and Autumn Douglas each toss-ed in 10 points for the Wildcats.
Christina Graves scored 17 for Fredonia. Kaitlyn Rogers had 13 points.
