HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High wrestlers kicked off the postseason on a high note.

Nine boys and four girls will advance to the upcoming regional competition by placing within the top four of their respective divisions at district tournaments.

The girls wrestled Friday in Osawatomie; the boys Saturday at Jayhawk-Linn.

The Lady Cubs are Division II wrestlers, which includes all schools from Class 1A through Class 4A. The boys wrestle in the Class 3-2-1A division.

On the boys’ side, Andrew Watts placed second at 285 pounds, falling in the championship match to Wellsville standout Colby Stephens.

Also placing second for Humboldt was River Kaufman at 220 pounds, who was pinned by another Wellsville standout, Parker Lengel.

Colton Johnson also took silver at 145 pounds. He was defeated in the finale by Garrett Seely of Jayhawk-Linn.

Others moving on to regionals, which are slated for Friday in Eureka, are Robbie Robertson, who took fourth at 113 pounds; Bradley Lowry, third at 126 pounds; Clay Shannon, fourth at 138 pounds; Drew Counsil, fourth at 160 pounds; Dakota Slocum, third at 170 pounds; and Garren Goodner, fourth at 195 pounds.

The top four regional finishers will advance to a substate round Feb. 20 in Marion, with the top four there going to Hays on Feb. 27 for state.

The district and substate tournaments were added to the postseason schedule in order to pare the number of wrestlers at the postseason sites because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The four Lady Cubs advancing to Saturday’s regional tournament in Burlington all finished in third place in their respective weight levels at district: Gabi Jackson at 115 pounds; Anna Goforth at 155 pounds; Elizabeth White at 191 pounds; and Raquel Aguilar at 235 pounds.

The top four regional finishers will proceed on to substate action Feb. 19 in Garnett, with the top four there advancing the state tournament in Salina Feb. 26.
