MORAN —  Marmaton Valley Junior High basketball teams had a rough go at home Monday against Northeast Middle School of Arma.
After a 5-5 first quarter, Northeast outscored Marmaton Valley’s boys 41-10 in the next two periods on its way to a 50-21 victory. Leading the Wildcat A-team was Brady Newman with 13 points.
Gage Adams chipped in with four points. Chad Starliper scored two. Michael Beggs and Keagan Boyd each had one point.
“Northeast had a fast and tough man-to-man defense and we didn’t match up with it very well after the first quarter,” said Arlyn Briggs, MVJH boys’ head coach.
In a two-quarter B-team game, Northeast beat the Wildcat boys 24-0.
Marmaton Valley’s girls stayed within striking distance of Northeast until the final period of the A-team game. Northeast led the Wildcats 24-19 heading into the fourth quarter but outscored them 7-2 to claim a 31-21 win.
“We got into foul trouble quickly forcing us to go to our bench. Our younger girls helped hold the game within reach,” said Brenda Mills, MVJH girls’ head coach.
“Mackenzie Tynon and Kyla Drake fouled out in the fourth quarter and that hurt us.”
Lindz McNeil fired in nine points for Marmaton Valley. Tynon had seven points. Ashlynn Pinkerton tossed in four points and Misty Storrer had one point.
In the girls’ B-team contest, Marmaton Valley led 12-4 at halftime. Northeast rallied for a 21-16 victory.
