Wildcats fall in Uniontown finale

The Marmaton Valley Wildcats will not have long to recover from last Friday's losses with the postseason getting underway for some programs Monday.

UNIONTOWN — Uniontown High’s strong third quarter spelled trouble for Marmaton Valley High’s boys Friday.

The Eagles turned a 21-18 halftime lead into a 38-25 lead headed into the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats rallied down the stretch, draining five 3-pointers in the period, but Uniontown hit 7 of 10 free throws to seal a 56-44 win.

The loss drops Marmaton Valley to 9-14 headed into the Class 1A-II Substate Tournament. Marmaton Valley will host either Central Christian or Chetopa at 2 p.m. Saturday in a semifinal game, with the Substate Championship to be decided Friday, March 6, at Hartford.

Strong finishes by Tyler Lord and Garrett Morrison led the Wildcat offense. Lord scored 16 points, 11 in the fourth quarter, while Morrison scored seven of his 14 in the final frame. Brevyn Campbell and Cooper Scharff added three and two, respectively.

Colter Powell scored 23 to lead the Eagles.

The Wildcat junior varsity brought home a 32-26 win.

Thomas Allee led the JV squad with 11, followed by Lane Lord with seven, Ethan Lawson with six, Jaxon Stevens and Kris McVey three each and Brady Burton with two.

IN GIRLS play, Uniontown won 37-9.

Andie Carr scored four points to lead the Wildcats. Emma Louk had three and Reagan Marshall two.

Klara Stock scored 10 for Uniontown.

Marmaton Valley’s girls (3-20) will host Peabody-Burns (1-17) at 6 p.m. Tuesday to open the playoffs. 

The winner will travel to Hutchinson next Monday, March 2, to take on Central Christian (21-2) in a tournament semifinal.
