PARSONS — Returning to play after a two-week break can be tough. A loss in overtime can make it tougher. Allen Community College’s men’s basketball team fell to Labette 98-95 in overtime Wednesday night.
The largest lead either team was able to reach was six points, forcing the game back and forth the entire way. The Red Devils held a 45-40 lead at halftime.
Allen led by three points with 20 seconds to go in regulation, but an ACC player fouled Labette near the basket and the shot went in. After hitting the free throw, the teams needed overtime to finish the game. The Red Devils were outscored 7-4.
Coach Andy Shaw said Allen outrebounded Labette by 12, but turnovers proved to be to costly — the Red Devils had 23 of them.
“We were very sloppy with the basketball in our first game back from Christmas break,” Shaw said.
Courtney Stockard came back to the team with a double-double, posting 30 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. He also had three blocks and two steals on defense. Josh Sweet followed with 14 points, making 4-9 from beyond the arc. Darnell Jones-Bowie scored 11 points and Jordan Nanton added 10.
Labette’s Tevin Foster scorched the Red Devils with 33 points, shooting a perfect 6-6 from the 3-point line. Overall Labette was 13-21 from 3-point range.
Allen plays on the road Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Neosho.

Humboldt basketball back in action
FREDONIA — Humboldt Middle School’s girl’s basketball teams won both of their games against Fredonia Monday.
The A-Team won, 43-19.
Even so, coach Scott Brady saw room for improvement.
“We really didn’t play well tonight,” he said. “The girls didn’t have school and were coming off winter break, it wasn’t our best performance to say the least.”
Maggie Johnson led the team with 13 points and swiped the ball six times on defense. Winter Lohmann followed with 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Kaylie Johnson and Emma Johnson each scored six points. Aricah McCall scored five points, with six steals and five assists. Sadie Houk scored a basket and Alayna Johnson scored a free throw.
The B-Team won, 28-20. Tori White led the team with eight points. Sydney Barker followed with six points. Melanie Hallacy scored four points and had five steals. Sadie Houk scored four points. Zoey Rinehart, Emma Johnson and Ashlynn Booth each scored two points.
THE EIGHTH-GRADE boys team beat Fredonia, 29-25.
“We came out sluggish,” coach Jeremy Weilert said. “We were down six after the first quarter and five at halftime. We outscored them 15-2 in the third quarter. Our defensive intensity picked up and we were able to get some easy buckets in transition.”
Dylan Doolittle led the Cubs with nine points and four steals. Caleb Coronado and Bo Bigelow each scored six points. Tucker Hurst scored three points and grabbed five rebounds, while Teryn Johnson scored two points and grabbed four rebounds. Kyler Allen scored two points and Logan Grey made a free throw.
The seventh-grade boys fell, 28-16.
“We played a great first half,” Weilert said. “We just couldn’t match their intensity in the third quarter.”
Josh Hull led the team with three points. Conor Haviland, Logan Dillow, Jackson Aikins, Cooper Jaro, Speed Hoepker and Gunner Elder each scored two points. Drake Hottenstein made a free throw.
Iola man declared dead in accident
A rural Iola man was declared dead after the minivan he was driving struck several items before crashing in a parking lot along North State Street Friday afternoon.
Edward Bush, 66, was northbound on State Street when he apparently suffered a medical episode that caused him to lose control of his vehicle.
The minivan he was driving struck a sign on the right side of State Street, near the New Greenery, before crossing the road and striking several objects on the left, including a mailbox and electric pole at the Kansas Department of Transportation building before eventually coming to rest near Orscheln Farm & Home.
Evidence from the wreckage indicates Bush was incapacitated before the accident, Iola Police Chief Jared Warner said.
It did not appear that he attempted to brake, for example.
Ambulance personnel took Bush to Allen County Regional Hospital, where he was declared dead.
The broken light pole triggered a breaker at Iola’s Oak Street substation, cutting power to much of the town for more than 30 minutes, City Administrator Carl Slaugh said.
Power was rerouted to the affected areas before the pole was replaced Saturday by Iola city crews.
Warner said Bush was taken to a coroner in Kansas City, Kan., to determine the cause of the medical condition.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident. There were no other injuries.

She was a proud graduate of Allen County Community College, where she won a state business competition and received national community college recognition under the coaching of Dave Roos.
Julie and her husband, Richard, were married at St. John’s Catholic Church in Iola. During their 41 years of marriage, they resided in six states and Julie was active in every community where she lived. She was a Girl Scout leader, certified national youth sports coach, substitute teacher and leader in the PTA as secretary, treasurer, vice president and president. She volunteered for many service organizations, including the Children’s Health Fund and Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, where she helped raise $4 million. Her greatest achievements were her marriage of 41 years and producing and raising two beautiful, accomplished daughters who reflect her values, caring, and kindness. She would say that she is very proud of her daughters, her greatest joy!
Julie had a life well lived, she was not impressed by power or prestige, but by acts of kindness by ordinary people. She will truly be missed, but her strength and love live on.
