Allen Co. inmate dies in custody

A 29-year-old Allen County Jail inmate died Wednesday after being found unresponsive in his cell.

A 29-year-old inmate at the Allen County Jail died Wednesday, one day after he was found unresponsive in his cell.

Allen County Sheriff Anthony Maness announced the death Wednesday afternoon in a press release.

Maness said the inmate, whose name was not released, was being held on alleged drug charges and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer. He was found unresponsive and “in medical distress.”

The inmate was transported to Allen County Regional Hospital, where he was placed on life support, and transported to Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

He was pronounced dead shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation will be in charge of the investigation, Maness said, referring all future inquiries to the KBI.
