MILDRED — A multi-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon sent three people to the hospital and closed U.S. 59 for several hours.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the accident occurred along U.S. 59, about a mile north of Mildred, when a northbound car driven by Kristi L. Hoard, 30, Fredonia, crossed the center line. Hoard’s car struck a southbound semitractor-trailer rig driven by Guy A. Runyon, 61, Russellville, Tenn., and  then collided head-on with another southbound car driven by Mika M. Tyhurst, Smithville, Mo.

Hoard was flown from the scene to Freeman Hospital in Joplin, while an occupant, Eleazar Palmern, 15, was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

Tyhurst was transported to Labette County Hospital in Parsons.

Troopers said Runyon suffered possible injuries, but did not seek treatment at the scene.

All of the occupants were wearing seat belts, troopers said.

The highway was closed north of Mildred for several hours while crews cleared the scene.
