The Iola Fillies came in first and the Mustangs were second at Thursday’s cross country meet at Central Heights.

Both junior varsity teams placed first and four middle school boys medaled in their races.

Thirteen schools competed in the race from classes 4A, 3A and 2A.

Elka Billings continued her stellar season with another top finish and it wasn’t really that close. Billings took a big lead early and didn’t give up, finishing with a time of 20:44.

Elysia Kunkler showed that she continues to acclimate to the cross country season after missing last year with an injury, finishing eighth with a season-best time of 22:08.

Ursula Billings finished 12th with a time of 22:21, Josie Plumlee finished 18th and Kelsey Morrison ended up in 19th with a time of 23:47 to round out Filly medal winners.

Madisyn Holloway barely missed out on that group, ending the race in 21st with a time of 24:02.

On the boys’ side, it was a two-team race as Iola and host Central Heights made up 12 of the top 15 finishers.

Iola fell just short of first by two points, and even that was with freshman Trenton Varney collapsed with a little over 100 yards to run. Varney was seventh at the time and had been sick the past several weeks.

Jack Adams, Cole Regehr and Bret Plumlee all finished within 17 seconds of each other, starting with Adams who ended up second with a time of 18:08.
Regehr finished fourth (18:19) and Plumlee finished fifth (18:25 — a season-best).

Nathan Louk also had his best race of the year, finishing 10th with a time of 19:14. Elijah Fawson ended up 14th (19:26) and Riley Jay just barely missed out on a medal with a 22nd place finish (19:53).

The junior varsity girls were led by Averie Sharon (23:51) who took first, followed by Lorie Carpenter in third (24:56), Elanie Sturgeon in fourth (25:02), Audrey Coltrane in fifth (25:19) and Ella Taylor in ninth (26:30).
Jorja Murcko finished 17th (28:16) and Hannah Hall rounded out the medal winners finished 18th, just three-tenths of a second behind Murcko.

The junior varsity boys finished two points ahead of second place Wellsville.

Nine out of the 20 JV medal winners were Mustangs, led by second-place runner Tavon Bass (19:43). Brett Morrison finished fifth (21:47), Landon Carson ended up ninth (22:14) and Blake Haar finished 12th (22:28).

Damien Dreyden finished 13th (22:37), Cal Leonard ended up 14th (22:42), Drake Delatorre finished 17th (22:52), Henry Lohman finished 18th (22:53) and Grant Luedke finished 20th (23:06).
