PITTSBURG — The Iola Mustangs more than held their own against a few larger programs while participating in the Pittsburg Tennis Tournament Thursday.
Sophomore Mosiah Fawson walked away with another gold medal after sweeping the competition Thursday.
Fawson opened the tournament with an 8-0 win over Pittsburg’s Jonathan Winzer. He later defeated Leo Suarez of Chanute 0-3 and wrapped up the day with an 8-2 victory over Donovan Dougherty of De Soto.
Iola’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Brody Thompson and Trapper Boren also picked up a win.
They opened with an 8-7 victory over Pittsburg tandem Jacob Berger and Wesley Hays, then fell to Chanute’s Caleb Cope and Harrison Vaughan, then fell in their final match to De Soto’s Eric Lange and Tanner Brace for third place.
In No. 2 doubles action, freshmen Maddux Franklin and Logan Belknap had success, but could not string enough successes to win. They opened with an 8-4 loss to Pittsburg’s Brandon Carter and Kai Wilson. In their second match, they fell to Chanute’s Eli Atherton and Garret Engelman 8-7 and wrapped up the road trip with an 8-1 loss to London Burch and Eli Hiker of De Soto.
The Mustangs return to the court Tuesday for a tournament in Chanute. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m.
